Storing Food

Image result for Dehydrating

by Ruth Pople

My hobby of dehydrating is far more than dehydrating it's an addiction! I feel that the key is to practice, practice, practice like a good baker. It seems so simple and it is, but the longer you do it the more you learn from prepping it to cooking it up! You can actually purchase a cheap dehydrator for under $50. A few pointers to help out old and new lovers of dry foods.
- Always use the freshest food possible (although many do dehydrate up older food as they are already drying out) when rehydrated the food will be at the same state you put it in the machine.

- Weekly before grocery day clean out your fridge and put in anything "worthy" of dehydrating so nothing goes to waste.
- Do you research on what you are dehydrating example corn and green beans must be blanched first.

cabbage and onions just chop and put them in.

- There should be a little air flow after you put foods in containers - I use old plastic containers or mason jars.

- When eating dried fruits watch your sugar intake as even though the pieces are small they still retain the same amount as a big piece of fruit - so you could eat a whole bag of apples and not even know it.

- If you sun dry anything put it in the freezer for 48 hours to kill off any bugs.

- Don't pile up your food in the dehydrator make sure there is airflow so that everything dries evenly. Also move trays around through the process as many dehydrators will dry quickly on the bottom and slower on the top.

- Re-hydrate by putting dry food in a bowl of water a few hours before cooking.

Many experienced dehydrator hobby lovers prefer dry food and the taste and flavor.

I love it because..
I feel there is no waste I grab a pinch of this and that for meal planning.
I can save my leftovers rather than trashing them
I never have to worry about the freezer crashing and losing all my food storage.
- makes all my meals more exciting because I always have lots of intresting ingredients on hand.
- saves me money big time from traveling to the store to saving from no waste.
- handy healthy snack.
- FREE FOOD! When your friends and neighbors are trying to get rid of the overflow volunteer to take it off their hands! They are happy to unload and you are blessed to be able to save it up for your family.
I want to encourage you if you are new to take up the hobby and practice, practice practice after awhile you will be sharing with your friends and laughing all the way to the bank!
